Wise Response
In the days that Jesus walked this earth, the issues and challenges of government leadership and oversight were also difficult, with political leaders and governments that produced much strife, conflict, and confusion for the people. Jesus taught about how to handle such issues when he was questioned by those in leadership. They were often trying to “trap him” with His own words. Here is an example, which is recorded in three of the Gospel accounts:
”The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.” Luke 20: 19-26 (ESV)
Supplications, Prayers, Intercessions, and Thanksgivings
The Lord Jesus’s response caused all who heard to marvel. It showed His incredible wisdom in putting governments and taxes in their appropriate perspective. The Lord gives us further instruction on how to manage and interact with those in government leadership in the following passages:
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:1–4 (ESV)
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Romans 13:1 (ESV)
“The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will.” Proverbs 21:1 (ESV)
“For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:16–17 (ESV)
Prayerfully Trust
God’s Word and promises are so powerful! I find that when I read and reflect on these passages, I have much more peace and understanding that the Lord is over ALL such things, even when I don’t know what’s going on or I simply can’t keep up. We need to pray for those in leadership and trust in His guidance for them. We need to prayerfully trust in His guidance for us and how we respond as followers of Christ, knowing the Kingdom of God is much more important than any earthly governments.
How are you processing all these changes that come to you each day?

Kent,
Excellent blog and so very very true. In these troublesome and uncertain times, it is such a joy that we can pray through seeking and trusting our Heavenly Father to guide and lead us through His Holy Spirit. I know in my personal journey I have found this to be more than comforting. In fact, the more we let go and let God, the more He reveals Himself to us with His assurances of peace, protection, joy and safety.
Blessings,
Dan
